Craftsman 19.2 volt C3 Cordless Tools Review – Sorting Out The Mayhem

Almost too many Craftsman 19.2 volt tools.

Choice is great but sometimes it can be overwhelming.  With over 65 pieces, accessories and kits available in the Craftsman C3 19.2 volt  line, it can a real challenge to find and pick the tools that are right for you.  On top of the huge selection,  if you go to Sears.com or your local Sears you WILL NOT find all of the C3 19.2  items.  Some items are labeled wrong on the website and the stores do not carry all of the items.

This article is an attempt to organize the line for you.  Scroll down if you want to get right to the tools. For the thousands of you who already own a Craftsman C3 19.2 volt system you can see if your favorite drill or light is still available or if it has been upgraded to a better model.  I’ll also tell you about the gems and lead bricks in the line and let you in on a few new tools Sears says are coming soon!  Warning! This is one of the longest articles I have ever written.  It will take you a while to get through it and see everything available.

What is a “C3″?

C3 is Craftsman’s homeowner line of 19.2 volt cordless power tools.  The line is one of the most extensive in the home repair and home improvement industry and for most of us the best value for the money. The Craftsman C3 19.2 volt line of cordless tools has been going through quite a few revisions and updates in the last few months.  In light of the changes and new items coming out it’s time to review the entire line.

The best feature of this line is there are over 32 individual tools that all use the same 19.2 battery. (with many more to come in 2010)

The second best feature is Craftsman is dedicated to upgrading the line as new battery and motor technology becomes cost effective.  They are intent on keeping the same battery “platform” as far into the future as I can see.

The third best feature is you can order your new item online and in many cases walk into your nearest Sears store within the hour and pick the item up.  Right from your computer you can see if they have the 19.2 volt tool you want in stock.  If they don’t, you can order it, and pick it up when it comes in.  No need to make a special trip to the store to see if they have it and no need to make a trip just to order it if they don’t.

Is The C3 19.2 volt Line The Best? or do you really need a MACK dump truck when a good pickup does the job most of the time?

No.  Simply stated the C3 line is not the most rugged line of cordless tools.  There are other lines of cordless tools out there that are more rugged (and expensive) But the C3 19.2 volt Craftsman is the best value for homeowners, tinkers and many repair techs. Other multi-tool lines of cordless tools like the Makita LXT focus on the construction trades.  For example, many of the tools in the Makita line you would never need (concrete vibrator) or only need once (autofeed screwdriver) as a homeowner.  The Model# 2601-22 Milwaukee drill is a better choice for a professional contractor than the Craftsman Compact Lithium-Ion Drill / Driver  Model 17310 , but the Milwaukee is much more expensive and the batteries only fit that drill and an impact driver (yet).  The Craftsman C3 19.2 batteries fit all the cordless tools I want now and may want in the near future.

But, don’t disregard the 19.2 volt line if you are a contractor.  It can be a very good value for contractors and builders who need a cordless tool, but don’t need to use it 10 hours a day, everyday.  An HVAC contractor recently told me: “I have about 40 of the 19.2 drills and they are very cost-effective for me.  My guys don’t use a drill that often, but they are really hard on them.  They throw them around, drop them, and lose them regularly.  The 19.2 volt is strong enough to do all their work and it doesn’t hurt my wallet as bad when I  have to replace them. ”  He was really excited about the new 4 place charger.

If you don’t use your drill more than once or twice a day seriously look at the Model 17310.  It comes with a compact lithium battery that will hold a charge for up to a year.  It’s lightweight and small enough to get into most areas.  With 340 in. lbs it is strong enough for all the tasks you normally do. At around $100 on sale it can be a great value for a repair tech, installer, or handyman.

Another contractor wrote me after this article was published saying, “Some things about lines such as Craftsman C3 are inaccurate.  They say that they are not the best and only for home users.  I’m a contractor and I use the C3 line everyday.  I take offense to someone saying they arent rugged enough.”  I don’t have a problem saying, “Thank you, I was wrong!”

Please Note: I believe I got all the specs right.  The information here is taken from Sears.com, and I looked at the actual boxes at my local Sears.  But some of the online descriptions are so cryptic that I may have gotten a few wrong.  If you don’t get exactly what you want, just return the item within 90 days to your local Sears and order a different model.  If you find a mistake, please leave a comment at the end of the article and I will correct it. I will also update this list as new items come out. One last note: Sears changes this line a lot.  If the price you see on their website ends in 88 it is a closeout and is only available while supplies last.

You can click on any “Model Number”  in this article and go to Sears.com to read more and purchase these tools.  If the model number will not click to Sears it is not available online yet. You can purchase it online and pick it up at your nearest Sears store. Drill/Drivers:

It is in your best interest to purchase the Drill/Driver with battery and charger first.  (Or a combo kit IF it has the tools you need) The drills usually have the best sales.  The model 17310 gives you a great start with a light weight compact lithium battery and multi-chemistry charger so you can add on as you need to.

Craftsman 19.2V C3 Compact Lithium-Ion Drill / Driver  Model 17310

This is the best drill in the line right now. 340 in-lbs of torque. 1/2 in. single sleeve keyless chuck. 2-speed gear box. 24 position adjustable torque clutch. One Model 11371 Lithium Battery. One Model 25926 Multi-Chemistry Charger.  It is the new compact frame, lightweight, high torque model.  It compares nicely to the DeWalt and Milwaukee compact drills.  For 90% of us homeowners this is exactly the drill we need.  I highly recommend this drill.

Craftsman 19.2 Volt C3 Drill Driver Model 17191

You probably don’t want this drill! Torque not listed (but about 100 in/lbs.) 3/8 in. chuck. 0 – 650 rpm. single speed gearbox. 24 position adjustable torque clutch. One Model 11375 NiCad  battery and a one Model 11041 NiCad ONLY charger. It is a single speed, low power drill, with one cheap battery and charger.  It is good for putting up curtain rods and that’s about it.

Right Angle Drill.  Most of your will like the new impact drivers for tight spaces instead of this drill. 150 In./Lbs. 3/8 in chuck. Single speed gearbox.0-1050 RPM Braking switch stops chuck quickly for easier, faster operation. No torque adjustment.  This is an “add on” and does not come with batteries or charger.

Impact Drivers:

There are two impact drivers (woodworking) in the line right now.  Don’t confuse these with the Model 17090 impact wrench (automotive). The newest Model# 17080, 17338 has 1500 inch/lbs and the older one that comes in the Model 11550 kit has 900 in/lbs.  The newest one has TWICE the torque as the one in the kit.

8. Craftsman C3 19.2 volt Combo Kit, Drill/Driver & Impact Driver Model 11550

Good Value Kit! Comes with a Model 11551 3/8 Drill and a 900 inch/lbs impact driver.  This is a great around the home kit.  Includes two Model 11375 NiCad batteries, 1-hour nicad only charger.

9. Craftsman C3 19.2V Impact Driver Kit Online only Model 17338

Newest and most powerful impact! But why they didn’t include a lithium battery and charger is beyond me.  1,500 in. lbs of torque and 0 – 3,500 Impacts Per Minute. Includes two Model 11375 NiCad batteries, 1-hour nicad only charger.

10. Craftsman 19.2V C3 Impact Driver Add On Model 17080

Best Value! Add on version of the 17080 kit. Buy this to go with your 17310 drill.  1,500 in. lbs of torque and 0 – 3,500 Impacts Per Minute.

Be Careful buying this set!  It only comes with one battery and a 24 hour slow charger.  Plan on buying a good charger immediately! The charger included with this kit will cook your batteries if you leave them plugged in! This was a 2009 Christmas leader item and they have a few left on clearance.  It’s a good value if you know you will have to buy a good charger and additional batteries.  This Craftsman C3 19.2-Volt 4pc Combo Kit comes with a 3/8 in. Drill/Driver, 5 1/2 in. Trim Saw, work light and vacuum; all powered by an included DieHard® 19.2V NiCd battery with charger. 10 pc. screwdriver bit set.

If you need a new charger or you have more than two 19.2 batteries this is the MUST HAVE accessory! You have to have this charger if you want to get long life out of your existing Nicads.  No need to remove batteries from charger anytime. This charger is labeled wrong on Sears.com.  It is  the charger that came in most of the kits sold with nicad batteries in the last few years.  One our charge time. This charger will not charge the new lithium batteries!

I understand that the very first 19.2 volt tools used a battery with external terminals.  If the old kit you own has the external terminal battery this is the replacement charger.  Don’t buy this charger if you batteries look like the ones listed in this article.

From here on through the end of this list of 19.2 volt tools assume it does not come with a battery and charger.  Buy a drill, or kit and then add these tools as you need them!

19.2 volt work light with a 180 degree pivoting head, overmold grip and switch, and high-intensity bulb. I highly recommend you buy 2 or 3 additional bulbs right away for this light.  Everyone loves this light but it eats bulbs regularly.
